HANG TIME

HANG TIME

A Flea Theater Production Written and Directed by Zora Howard

HANG TIME explores the interiority of Black men in America, and the ways in which their humanity can triumph over the brutality that has been brought against them.

Three men chew the fat under an old, wide tree. In HANG TIME, we peek into the interiority – the great loves and bitter blues – of Black men in America. Setting the romantic and the macabre in sharp relief, HANG TIME invites the viewer to envisage the living Black body triumphant over the legacy of violence that it holds.

Experience this searing theatrical work written and directed by Harlem-bred Pulitzer Prize Finalist Zora Howard in community and kinship at The Apollo Stages at The Victoria.

“A startling and stunning tableau…an absolutely heart wrenching and hauntingly beautiful experience” – The Front Row Center

“A bruising statement about the systemized dehumanization of Black men... a stunning picture of the ‘strange fruit’ that Billie Holiday sang about, of Black bodies swinging from trees... The writing is bleak and colorful and gorgeous enough for poetry.” – Lighting & Sound America

Opportunities for School Performances:

NYC Educators: Bring your students grades 11-12 to a special School Day Live performance of HANG TIME on Wednesday, November 12th at 1pm.

School Day Live - HANG TIME

This special School Day Live presentation of The Flea’s HANG TIME brings high school students together to explore the interiority of Black men in America.

In HANG TIME, we peek into the interiority – the great loves and bitter blues – of Black men in America. Blood is a young man with dreams of traveling and seeing the world, while Slim, the middle-aged trickster, brings humor and hard-earned wisdom from life as a rolling stone. Bird, the eldest, watches carefully, grounding the others with quiet authority amid their unpredictable circumstances. Their banter, songs, and even arguments offer solace and distraction, all while the shadow of a certain end lingers above them.

Setting the romantic and the macabre in sharp relief, HANG TIME invites the viewer to envisage the living Black body triumphant over the legacy of violence that it holds.

Following the performance, students and faculty are invited to stay for a post-show talkback.
