Since introducing the first Amateur Night contests in 1934, the Apollo Theater has served as a testing ground for new artists working across a variety of art forms and has ushered in the emergence of many new musical genres—including jazz, swing, bebop, R&B, gospel, blues, soul, and hip-hop. With programming that includes new theatrical works, dance, and musical performances, the Apollo’s forward-looking artistic vision continues to build on this legacy.

Take a look to see why the Apollo continues to be the Soul of American Culture.

ABOUT THE SAY IT LOUD SEASON

The Apollo Theater has been an advocate for Black excellence and its contribution to American and global culture for 85 years. Our history has always has been at the intersection of art and activism, and our programming continues to center Black conversation. The Apollo has always been a space to offer a new vision for the world to view our society from the perspectives that are largely unseen and unheard across mainstream society.

Our 2018-2019 season – Say It Loud! is a dynamic collection of works that serve as a rallying cry. In today’s fractured political climate and in this crucial election year, our voices are as important as ever. We hope these works engage and inspire you in new and powerful ways.

We foster dialogue around important issues, not only through our mainstage productions, but also with our education and community programs. Say it Loud! is as much a call to action today as it was 50 years ago. Since its founding, the Apollo Theater has been a platform, partner and advocate for the ways in which music, theater and culture can be a catalyst for social change.

Join the movement as we continue this legacy of igniting action through arts, culture and ideas. I look forward to seeing you at the theater!
