Uptown Hall: The Strategic King: MLK’s Visionary Leadership

This broadcast special featured Apollo Uptown Hall airing nationally for the first time on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day on over 300 stations on NPR’s 1A, in addition to All of It with Allison Stewart locally in New York.

On January 12th, the Apollo Theater and WNYC  partnered for the seventh year to present WNYC’s 14th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day celebration, The Strategic King: MLK’s Visionary Leadership as part of the Apollo’s Uptown Hall series. Jami Floyd, local host of All Things Considered, and Alison Stewart, local host of All of It  moderated this convening of artists and activists, journalists, and changemakers to deeply engage with Dr. King’s legacy and how his actions and teachings spoke to and informed the social justice matters of our own time. This year’s event focused on Dr. King and his colleagues’ skillful use of the media and politically strategic tactics to influence politicians and help pass key legislation in the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s. Panelists considered how those strategies inform and inspire contemporary social justice movements, especially as some of those very protections are under attack today.
