The Apollo mourns the passing of Representative Charles Rangel, former Apollo Board Chairman and visionary champion for justice. Having served Harlem in the U.S. House of Representatives for over four decades, Representative Rangel’s legacy transcends his historic congressional tenure.
As a founding member of the Congressional Black Caucus, a decorated veteran awarded the Purple Heart and Bronze Star with Valor, and a long-time leader of The Apollo, Rep. Rangel profoundly shaped The Apollo, Harlem, and America through his steadfast leadership and commitment to equality.
Michelle Ebanks, Apollo CEO and President, reflected, “An unflappable force in politics and lawmaking, Rep. Rangel’s dedication to justice, equality, and advocacy for humanity and the arts made him inseparable from The Apollo and the Harlem community. We are eternally grateful for his influence, service, and the countless lives he touched. As a friend and mentor, I am forever inspired by his courage and tenacity. Our deepest condolences go to his family, loved ones, and the entire Harlem community during this difficult time.”
Apollo Board Chairman Charles Phillips added, “Congressman Charles Rangel was not only a towering figure in American politics but also a fierce advocate for Harlem and the cultural institutions that illuminate our community to the world. At The Apollo, we remember him as a tireless champion, a neighbor, and a friend. His leadership and presence shaped the legacy of this community, and he will be profoundly missed.”
