“Education must enable one to sift and weigh evidence, to discern the true from the false, the real from the unreal, and the facts from the fiction.”

Apollo Education invites the community to join this year’s MLK Young Changemakers event, honoring Dr. King’s powerful legacy in a modern context. MLK Young Changemakers is a series of conversations in recognition of Dr. King’s impact and the National Youth Day of Service.

This year’s MLK Young Changemakers: TL; DR focuses on Dr. King’s belief in education and its impact on our communities. Young advocates can honor Dr. King’s legacy in a way that matters now: by sharing information, advocating for media literacy, and fighting against the spread of misinformation.

Come to The Apollo Stages at The Victoria to support a new generation passionate about a better future in a digital world. This is your chance to connect, speak up, and drive change.

About MLK Young Changemakers:

In honor of Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day and the National Day of Service, MLK Young Changemakers is an inspiring panel discussion with emerging activists and community leaders about the unique ways young people can harness their talents to affect change and serve their communities.

Nuyorican Poets Cafe Grand Slam 2025
The Apollo Stages at The Victoria
Nuyorican Poets Cafe Grand Slam 2025

The Nuyorican Poets Cafe presents the Grand Slam of 2025 a spoken word extravaganza co-hosted by Paul con Queso and Matthew Marroquín. After 12 months of weekly slam winners competing every Final Friday, the time has come for one poet to be named the Grand Slam Champion of 2025 winning $1,000, a produced show in our renovated building, and potential spot on our 2026 national slam team. The Nuyorican Poets Cafe is a nonprofit organization rooted in the legacy of spoken word truth-telling. Founded by Puerto Rican/Afro-Caribbean poets and visionaries, we honor this sacred history by creating an accessible forum for developing poetic, theatrical, musical, and visual/media works in the spirit of experimentalism and downtown NYC subcultures. Since closing our building for a major renovation, we have taken our programs offsite at different locations throughout NYC, the country, and the world. We are happy to bring the 2025 Grand Slam back to The Apollo Stages.

Since its founding, the Festival has produced the plays of dozens of emerging writers whose works explore a wide range of themes and perspectives. The Festival also supports actors, directors, and technical personnel to help seed the pipeline with diverse talent and amplify underrepresented voices in theater in New York and beyond. The Fire This Time playwrights have gone on to have their plays produced in cities across the United States and work as writers in film and television. The Fire This Time Festival has evolved into an annual January event and continues to grow, expanding upon its core short play presentations to offer panel discussions, staged readings, a playwright’s lab and other programs.
