TEACHING AND LEARNING WITH THE APOLLO THEATER
The Apollo and Harlem: Teaching History through Arts and Community
Thursday, June 9 at 8:30 a.m. - 3 p.m.
Join the Education Program for an inspiring full day of professional development through the lens of Harlem and the Apollo Theater. Participants will explore the historical, social, and cultural context of early 20th century arts and entertainment in Harlem through hands-on activities, walking tours, and facilitated group discussions.
Activities will provide educators with a number of exciting strategies for engaging students in the interdisciplinary study of the Arts, ELA, and Social Studies.
Included will be:
• Historical Walking Tour of 125th street’s Theaters, educators will examine the history of the neighborhood and the impact of Harlem’s changing demographics, economics, and social trends.
• A specially designed Apollo backstage tour will highlight Harlem’s entertainment history though the 20th century.
• A workshop based on bringing history to life through theater and music.
$60 per person (includes light breakfast, lunch, and all program materials.
