The Apollo’s Salon Series supports the development of new works. It is an incubator for new and innovative forms of artistic expression. Artists and new projects are provided an opportunity to stretch their creative boundaries and present works-in-progress.
The Apollo is pleased to be supporting, through the Salon Series, the “concert” performance of Toshi Reagon and Bernice Johnson Reagon’s new opera before it goes on tour and debuts as a fully realized production.
Based on the novels Parable of the Sower and Parable of the Talents by Octavia E. Butler
Based on the post-apocalyptic novel by the late Afro-futurist and science fiction author Octavia Butler, Parable of the Sower is a genre-defying work of political theater that harnesses two hundred years of Black music. Written by Toshi Reagon and Bernice Johnson Reagon, Parable chronicles the spiritual awakening of young Lauren Olamina amidst a dystopian America wracked by the violence brought on by climate change that has driven society to the brink. Exploding the form of an opera, Parable fuses science fiction, African-American spiritualism, deep insights into gender and race, and climate activism to construct a mesmerizing meditation on the future of human civilization. Co-Commissioned by The Arts Center, Abu Dhabi.
