Working with the Social Studies and ELA teachers, we work with the students to learn to capture and document oral history interviews using documentary filming techniques. Afterwards, they analyze, curate, and edit the footage to make a documentary film.

CS 154 The Harriet Tubman Learning Center

For over 10 years, fourth and fifth-grade students from CS 154 interviewed members of the Significant Elders of Harlem organization. The focus of this project is learning about the community’s history through storytelling, interviewing, and theater. Students learn how to craft unique questions and conduct an oral history interview with community members to bring their stories to life.

In 2019, the interviews were then used to create a podcast.

Working closely with the photography teacher, students learned to analyze and edit audio of an oral history interview, and accompany it with the photo of the subject, to create an interactive installation. This provided students with a different perspective to view and celebrate their community.
