Salon Series
Since 2006, the Salon Series has been bringing edgy artists uptown to the Apollo, providing them a space to stretch their creative boundaries and present works-in-progress on the Theater’s Soundstage. The Salon Series is the traditional “Apollo Experience” taken to the next level, providing both emerging and established artists with the time and space that are key to the creation of new works. This groundbreaking series spotlights the Apollo’s continued dedication to its performing arts programming and its support of artistic experimentation and dialogue in contemporary culture. The series grows out of the Apollo’s ongoing role as an incubator for new and innovative forms of artistic expression and its 79-year history of nurturing up-and-coming talent. As with all Apollo Theater programming, the Salon Series recognizes the critical role of the audience in artistic development and offers artists the opportunity to share new ideas in an intimate setting with audience members seated no more than ten feet from the performers. Past Salon Series events have included works from, among others, creator and composer Fred Ho, vocalist Helga Davis, composer and vocalist Imani Uzuri, DJ Spooky, jazz musician Russell Gunn, trombonist and musical director Craig Harris, music group Burnt Sugar the Arkestra Chamber, and multidisciplinary artist Queen Esther.

The staged reading of blessing the boats: the remix is presented as part of Blink Your Eyes: Sekou Sundiata Revisited, a city-wide retrospective that pays tribute to the life, work, and legacy of artist poet and educator Sekou Sundiata. blessing the boats: the remix re-imagines Sundiata's landmark solo performance through the unique interplay of performers. The piece will premiere during the River To River Festival in June 2013.

Carl Hancock Rux returns to his artistic roots and reunites his spoken word/performance band in Rux Revival. Through Rux’s signature “dizzying oral artistry,” this weekend will reflect on his musical journey from the autobiographic work of his critically acclaimed debut album Rux Revue to his albums Apothecary Rx, Good Bread Alley, and Homeostasis, which explore more global themes. Blending multimedia by video artist Onome Ekeh and live performance, Rux reunites with original band members including Helga Davis, Marcelle Davies-Lashley, Jason DiMatteo, and Fred Cash and is joined by new band members Hamilton “Fitz” Kirby and Lon Kaiser to capture the revival experience through spectacle and electrifying sound.
Rux, along with conductor, Greg Tate and special guests KimberlyNichole Rock Ballerina, Nona Hendryx and Martha Redbone, will capture the revival experience through spectacle and sound.
