Breakin’ Convention, the Apollo’s 4-day international festival of hip hop dance theater fresh from Sadler’s Wells in London, extends an Apollo heritage that started with dancers like the Nicholas Brothers and Bill “Bojangles” Robinson, and continued with the gyrations and innovations of James Brown and Michael Jackson. Now dance is a regular feature at the Apollo with appearances by Alvin Ailey American Dance Company, Dance Theater of Harlem, Ballet Hispanico and the Bessie Awards.
