Abby Dobson

Apollo Music Café, March 16, 2012.  The music of most recording artists is usually not influenced by books and essays written by names such as Emily Dickinson, James Baldwin, Toni Morrison and Alice Walker.  The Jamaican born and Brooklyn raised Abby Dobson is not most recording artists. This singer/ songwriter/ performer bravely merges her passion for meaningful words with musical influences that span past genre lines. She has opened for or worked with artists such as: John Legend, Robert Glasper, Jaguar Wright, Dwele, Ledisi, Kanye West, and Talib Kweli. Her musical influences include Anita Baker, Cassandra Wilson, Liz Wright, Whitney Houston and Donny Hathaway.

Abby Dobson’s music is an organic voyage that is an emulsion of soul, folk, pop, and reggae.   She has garnered a strong cult following via her kinetic live performances.  She is currently riding the crest of acclaim generated by her debut album, “Sleeping Beauty- You Are The One You Have Been Waiting On”.  This album is loosely based on the legendary fairytale “Sleeping Beauty.”  When asked about the album, Dobson shares, "The point is that rather than waiting for a prince to kiss and wake you, rather than waiting for a principality to create opportunities for you, rather than waiting for someone else to give you what you want and need, know that you are the one you have been waiting on.  Whatever you think you don't have or can't do, yes you can have and yes you can do. The kiss, however, should first come from you."
