Bobby Sanabria

Bobby Sanabria, the son of Puerto Rican parents, was born and raised in the "Fort Apache" section of New York City's South Bronx.  He was inspired and encouraged to pursue music by maestro Tito Puente.  Today, Sanabria is known as a leader in the Afro-Cuban, Brazilian and jazz fields as both a drummer and percussionist and is recognized as one of the most articulate musician-scholars living today.

Mr. Sanabria is a composer, arranger, percussionist, educator and historian of music.  He has performed and recorded with every major figure in the world of jazz and Afro-Cuban music -- including Mario Bauzá,  Dizzy Gillsepie, Mongo Santamaria, Candido, Chico O'Farill, Ray Barretto, Paquito D'Rivera, Tito Puente, Larry Harlow and Marco Rizo.

He is also an accomplished filmmaker having been an associate producer on award winning documentaries like "The Palladium Where Mambo Was King" for BRAVO and the ALMA Award winning "From Mambo To Hip Hop: A South Bronx Tale" for PBS. He recently was a consultant and featured in the 4 hour PBS documentary, "Latin Music U.S.A." He is on the faculty of the New School and The Manhattan School of Music where he passes on the tradition by teaching Afro-Cuban Jazz Orchestras at both institutions.

The recent Kenya Revisited Live!!! CD by the MSM Afro-Cuban Jazz Orchestra under Sanabria's baton was nominated for a Latin Grammy in 2009 and the recently released Tito Puente Masterworks Live!!! has garnered critical acclaim.  A winner of numerous awards, Mr. Sanabria was inducted into the Bronx Walk of Fame having a street named after him on the Grand Concourse.
